Salary Depends on Qualifications Location Main Campus - Portales, NM Job Type Full time permanent Job Number 2023-00212 Department Academic Affairs Division Broadcast Center Opening Date 10/16/2023 Position Overview Two Positions Available Position Summary Under general direction of the Director of Broadcasting, the Broadcast Engineer is responsible for maintaining the transmitters and microwave networks, installing, maintaining, and repairing electronic equipment at all facilities associated with the production, storage, dissemination, and transmission of audio and video programming produced by the Broadcast Center of Eastern New Mexico University.
Requirements Duties and Responsibilities: Provides exceptional customer service in all interactions with students, staff, and the general public.
In coordination with the professional engineering, production, and operations staff the Broadcast Engineer assists in planning for both current and future technical needs of the Broadcast Center.
Install, maintain, repair, and adjust a wide variety of equipment used in the Broadcast Center.
Broadcast equipment includes television cameras, audio production consoles, video productions switchers, distribution and synchronizing systems, tape, optical and hard drive storage systems, digital encoders and decoders, computer networks, routers, automation systems, editing computers, and a wide variety of interface, processing, and conversion equipment.
Broadcast equipment includes analog and digital radio frequency (RF) FM and television transmitters, receivers, and antenna systems at present location and all Facilities.
Transmission equipment includes fiber optics, transmission control protocol/internet protocol (TCP/IP), and microwave transmitters and receivers, various computers, servers, and operating systems.
Remote control systems include micro-processor-based status, telemetry, control, and logging systems.
Provides maintenance of all technical broadcast equipment used by the Broadcast Center to ensure the station meets all required technical standards.
Analyze and repair technical faults on equipment and systems.
Minimize loss of service when equipment fails by quickly identifying and implementing alternative methods of service provision.
Verbally communicate and write reports of maintenance activities.
Provide on-call service during nights and university holidays in accordance with a mutually agreed upon rotating schedule among the professional engineers.
Keeps abreast of new technology and best practices in the field of technical broadcasting.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in electronics or related field (Electrical Engineering) or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience in electronic technology, computers, and/or broadcasting.
Experience with high power RF technology and knowledge about computers and data networking technology desirable.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of both the theoretical and practical technical side of radio/TV broadcasting.
Knowledge of state and federal requirements dealing with radio and television broadcasting.
Knowledge of University policies and procedures and structures Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Ability to maintain friendly customer service and professional demeanor with all constituencies.
Project coordination and organizational skills and the ability to work as a team player.
Ability to present a professional, pleasant and cooperative attitude in coordinating communication between staff and the general public.
Working Conditions Physical Demand and Working Conditions: Duties require a flexible work schedule that requires in-state or out-of-state travel, evening and weekend work, in benign and hazardous conditions, including working with high voltages and high-power RF systems.
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors.
Work is often performed in the field, as well as in the Broadcast Center, and at remote electronic sites around the state.
Work requires the use of arms, legs, hands, fingers, hearing, talking, and balance, including the ability to frequently lift or carry a maximum weight of up to 50 pounds, excellent manual dexterity, climbing ladders to a maximum height of 12 feet and working on rooftops or platforms above ground level.
May involve climbing towers at 100 ft or more with specialized training.
